Day 25 – A Song That Makes You Laugh
Jiggery Pokery – The Duckworth Lewis Method
From the brilliant cricket-themed album by the DLM, made up of Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy and his fellow Irish cricket loving musician Thomas Walsh (from a band called Pugwash apparently). Several of the songs make me laugh to be honest, but this is the funniest of them. Written from the perspective of the rotund former England captain Mike Gatting, it describes one of the most famous moments in cricketing history, namely the “ball of the century” bowled to Gatting by now-legendary Australian spin bowler Shane Warne (yes, the one who is currently having it away with Liz Hurley, for those of you more familiar with celeb gossip magazines than the great sport of cricket). It is a brilliant characterisation of Gatt and a superb, tongue-in-cheek account of the incident, which I remember watching live on TV, with similar bemusement to that displayed in the lyrics here. The video is an animation that someone has done to accompany the song.
For those of you who are not fans of cricket, and therefore unfamiliar with the characters involved and the events recounted, the song is probably just bizarre. But anything that has a rousing chorus of “Baboon, baboon, baboon, baboon” has to be good.
